Physical Vigor: The Musician as Athlete
We believe establishing patterns that lead to physical vigor at an early age will enable our students to better meet the physical demands of practicing, rehearsing and performing. It is our intent to impress upon our students the need to view themselves as athletes whose discipline is the performance of music.
Stretching
Our students participate in 10-15 minutes of stretching, 6 days per week. Led by James Giles, 5th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do (American Tae Kwon Do Association), the stretching activity is designed to prepare the students for the day's musical activities. Particular focus is upon stretching and building the upper body, with emphasis on the back, shoulders, arms and hands.
Outdoor Activities
Taking advantage of the beauty of our setting, our students set out on graded hikes and other activities that promote physical vigor. The images of the majesty of the Colorado Rockies serve as inspiration for our "mental diets." The exercise provides a break from the intensity of our curriculum. The camaraderie strengthens our community. |

Tae Kwon Do
Offered as an elective interdisciplinary class, Tae Kwon Do represents the kind of physical training that can engage students for a lifetime. The study of this discipline offers increased flexibility, strength and aerobic conditioning.
The mental discipline required to master this martial art is akin to that of the study of music. The performance demands of Tae Kwon Do similarly mirror those of music performance as well. Though pairing the study of music and the study of Tae Kwon Do is unusual, it is remarkably beneficial.
